Exploring the Power of New Media to Shape the Contemporary Nigerian Society
The Conference 57 Chief Press Secretaries gathered at the NAPTIN Centre in Surulere from November 10th to 12th for their annual media retreat, aptly named "Surulere 2023." This year's retreat focused on the theme, "New Media: The Virtual Platform to Project and Propagate in Contemporary Nigerian Society."
The event brought together a dynamic and diverse group of press secretaries from across Lagos’ 57 LGA/LCDAs. These communications experts converged to explore the rapidly evolving landscape of new media and its significance in shaping the narratives and discourse in modern Nigerian society.
During the opening ceremony, Ayodele Ayeyemi, State Chairman Conference 57 Chief Press Secretaries, emphasized the importance of harnessing the potential of new media in disseminating information, influencing public opinion, and engaging the citizens of Nigeria. He stated, "New media has become an integral tool in our roles as press secretaries. It enables us to connect, inform, and engage with our audiences more effectively than ever before."
Prominent speakers and experts in the fields of media, communication, and technology shared their insights at the retreat. They discussed various topics, including the responsible use of social media, fact-checking in the digital age, and strategies to ensure the authenticity of information shared through online platforms.
The retreat also featured practical workshops and interactive sessions, where attendees had the opportunity to develop their skills in content creation, data analytics, and online crisis management.
One of the highlights of the event was a panel discussion featuring renowned social media influencers and digital content creators who shared their experiences in using new media to address societal issues and drive positive change in Nigeria.

Oluwaseun Micheal, a press secretary from Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, stated, "Surulere 2023 has been a transformative experience. It has deepened our understanding of the power of new media and how we can leverage it to better serve our respective states and the nation."
